21st Century Orff Schulwerk: Making Responsive Teaching and Collaborative Learning Visible
Teachers and students have been impacted socially, emotionally, and academically over the past 18 months. The pandemic as well as the heightened cultural consciousness may well have brought about a need to rethink and redesign instructional design, curriculum, teaching, and learning.
This workshop addresses the impact of current realities on teaching and learning in general, and in Orff Schulwerk programs in particular. The 21st Century Orff Schulwerk model emphasizes using students’ cultural information, student-generated ideas, and responsive processes to: scaffold learning, emphasize communal orientation, focus on relationships, plan cognitive scaffolding, and develop social awareness in addition to aligning with 21st century educational frameworks. During the workshop participants will engage in activities framed in culturally relevant and responsive teaching, use selected inclusion strategies for collaborative learning, and examine criteria for curating folk songs, chants, dances, stories, and poetry while examining processes for designing and facilitating instruction.
Manju Durairaj was born, raised, and educated in Pune, India. She was also involved in graduate research projects on comparative pedagogical practices of Indian (Carnatic) and Western Music at Middlesex University, London, UK. Furthermore, she graduated with her second master’s degree and K-12 certification from VanderCook College of Music in Chicago.
Manju is the Lower School Music Teacher at the Latin School of Chicago. She is AOSA’s Vice President Elect of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, she is past president of the Greater Chicago Orff Chapter, and she is a certified Orff-Schulwerk Levels Instructor as well as a certified Arts Integration specialist. Manju is on the Elementary General Music Council of the Illinois Music Education Association. She is an adjunct professor at VanderCook College of Music, Chicago where she teaches curriculum design and both graduate and undergraduate elementary music methods courses. Manju’s continuing-teacher-education courses, both on-campus and online, include: Culturally Responsive Music Education, Technology, Arts Integration, Curriculum Development, Responsive Classroom, and Redesigning Teaching & Learning for the 21st Century.
Manju is a frequent clinician at various state, national, and international education conferences. She has been published in the Orff Echo, Reverberations, Illinois Music Educators Journal, General Music Today, and The Journal of the Council for Research in Music Education. In addition, her Hal Leonard publications include: “InterAct with Music Assessment Levels 1 and 2,” “InterAct Levels 1&2 Student Activities for Devices and Print,” “Technology in Today’s Music Classroom,” and (Music Express Magazine) “Dancing Around the World.”

Rebuilding and Reconnecting Through Music
Learn how to incorporate student ideas to create musical experiences that are unique to the class as we rebuild and reconnect after a disrupted school year. These musical experiences will reflect the specific character of the individual and the classroom community. Through these activities, students will take greater ownership in the process and see themselves as central to the musical experience that reflects their racial, cultural, and communal identities.
Dr. Cribari is a Colorado native who has been teaching music to children for 20 years. He has worked to educate preschool to high school students and has conducted a variety of ensembles including Renaissance consorts, choirs, jazz bands, and symphony orchestras. Dr. Cribari received a Bachelors degree in Piano and Vocal education from the University of Northern Colorado, a Master of Arts with an emphasis in Orff Schulwerk from the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota, and his doctorate in music education from Boston University.
In addition to teaching children at Coyote Hills School, Dr. Cribari has taught graduate students at Southern Methodist University, Mills College, Central Michigan University, the University of St. Thomas, George Mason University, Anderson University, and the University of Central Arkansas. Dr. Cribari is on the board of trustees for the Hidden Valley Music Seminars in Carmel Valley, California, and is a frequent clinician at music education conferences throughout the country.

Look Up! SEL-Based Orff-Schulwerk Lessons for Dreamers
A Message from SDAOSA Vice-President, Sasha Stone: Happy New Year! I hope everyone is staying healthy and settling back in your classroom after a much-needed break. I wanted to update you about our February 12th workshop. Unfortunately our originally-scheduled presenter (Aimee Curtis Pfitzner) will not be able to join us due to a school performance that needed to be rescheduled. Aimee will instead be joining us in March of 2023! The workshop on February 12th will instead be led by our very own Crystal Pridmore! We look forward to seeing you at E.B. Scripps Elementary School on February 12th!
In this workshop, Crystal invites you to explore and create with your students by using the imagery of the moon and stars. Participants will receive music and movement lesson materials for grades K-6, slides to use in the classroom, and reflection materials for their own teaching practice. Join us in a restorative, joyful workshop.
Crystal Pridmore has been teaching music for 15 years as a private voice instructor, secondary choir director, early childhood music specialist, and PreK-8 general music teacher. She currently runs the general music, choral, and strings program for PreK-6th grade students at Finney Elementary School. She holds a BA in Music Education and MA in Teaching from Point Loma Nazarene University and California Single Subject Teaching Credential in Music. She actively serves throughout the community as a singer and choir member and frequently collaborates with other musicians in various capacities. She is the creator and co-host of the Chaotic Harmony podcast, chronicling the reestablishment of music programs in Chula Vista Elementary School District after a 30-year absence of arts education. In addition, Crystal has completed 3 levels of certification in Orff-Schulwerk and serves as the San Diego American Orff-Schulwerk Association chapter president. She is a current member of CMEA (California Music Educators Association), NAfME (National Association for Music Education), and AOSA (American Orff Schulwerk Association). She is the recipient of the 2020 CMEA Southern Border Section Elementary Music Specialist Fortissimo Award and was a Semifinalist for the 2020 GRAMMY Music Educator Award.

A Mix of Folk and Fun!
Come experience traditional folk lessons, each with a creative fun twist! Getting students engaged to build basic musical motor skills can be a challenge. Join Tim as he shares lessons and games that will motivate students to make the repetitions necessary to achieve mastery in a variety of topics.
Tim Wiegand graduated from Syracuse University with a BA in Music Education and received his masters degree with an emphasis in Orff-Schulwerk from UNLV (University of Nevada Las Vegas). Tim has been teaching elementary general music in the Clark County School District for over 21 years and is a regular presenter for school district staff development sessions. Tim directed students in various children’s performances at the 2002 AOSA National Conference in Las Vegas. In the 2004, 2005, 2010, 2013 and 2015 National AOSA Conferences (various locations) Tim was a conference session presenter. Tim has been a clinician at Orff workshops all over the country and Canada since 2004. Being a percussionist, Tim has found Orff-Schulwerk to be a natural fit for him.
