THIS Saturday, March 12 will be our next outstanding San Diego AOSA workshop with Colleen Vernon from Baltimore, Maryland:

– improvisations
– compositions
– a DIY musical production at any scale, for any group of students
– a Savoy-Style jam circle in your classroom
– well-rounded lessons that you’ll love to teach and that will give your students a creative voice
– take home ready-to-use lesson ideas that will inspire you to create your own lessons!

PLEASE BRING A SOPRANO RECORDER if you have one. We will also need a few alto and tenor recorders.

Our next exciting workshop will be Saturday, March 12 at Skyline Elementary. Please join us and invite a friend or colleague as we get our creative juices flowing!

Orff Schulwerk gives teachers the power to design music classes that give students a creative voice. This workshop will give ideas for supporting students through the creative process, taking baby steps towards improvisation and composition with movement, rhythm, and recorder. Unlock your own creativity as a teacher to design well-rounded lessons that you love to teach! Use swing music to inspire a Savoy-Style jam circle in your classroom! Get ideas for building a DIY musical production at any scale, for any group of students. Get some wonderful take-home lesson ideas and the tools to create your own!

Colleen Vernon has been teaching general music for Pre-K-5th grade for thirteen years. She received her degrees from Ithaca College and West Chester University. She has Level III Orff Schulwerk Certification and is a certified AOSA movement instructor. She has given numerous workshops around the DC metro area, presented at AOSA conferences, and instructed Level 1 Orff Movement at Winthrop University. She served as co-president for the Greater Baltimore Orff Schulwerk Chapter. Colleen spent seven years as a professional Lindy Hop competitor and instructor for Charm City Swing in Baltimore. She currently performs on recorder with Baltimore’s Society for Early Music, teaches early childhood music classes at Glenelg Country School, and sings and dances with her two children as much as possible!

Admission: Free to current SDAOSA members. Guests and college students are welcome and will be asked to pay the appropriate walk-in fees.

SDAOSA UPCOMING POST-CONFERENCE WORKSHOP with National Presenter JIM SOLOMON – a masterful and engagingteacher of process!

DATE:  Saturday, January 23, 2016
TIME:  9 am – 3 pm

“How’d They Learn That?  Process Teaching! . . . and . . . Flourishing in an Orff Music Room”

Sing, move, clap, dance, improvise, jam . . . play *congas, *recorders, Orff instruments . . . perform a variety of kid-tested pieces . . . then analyze the process utilized in teaching each piece.  We will also take a look at techniques that will streamline your teaching and help you manage your room. 

LUNCH and SNACKS will be available on site for purchase

COST:  AOSA is partially funding this post-conference workshop in appreciation for the tremendous work accomplished for our recent November 2015  National Conference in San Diego and will be Free of Charge to members of the Conference Co-Hosting Chapters:  Orange County, Los Angeles, Inland Counties, and Desert Valley (Las Vegas).  SDAOSA Chapter Members attend free with a current membership.

All other walk-in guests are most welcome and will pay the usual walk-in fees. (see

Conference Week Greetings SDAOSA Friends!

The time has arrived…. Our National AOSA Conference begins here in San Diego Wednesday, November 11 and continues through Saturday the 14th at the Town and Country Convention Center. On site Registration will be available beginning Wednesday. Check for details.

We extend heartfelt appreciation for the incredible amount of planning and work that has been performed by so many of our willing, dedicated, talented chapter members this past year – and longer for some, notably our “fearless leaders” and local chairs Sheryl Lloyd and Linda Lungren, and also their wonderful committee.

Very best wishes to all for a successful, enjoyable Conference full of learning and fun alongside all that labor.  Hope to see many of you there!

Learn about their All-School Sing, adding music to Picture Books, and how to tell a great story. . . and all right here in San Diego.

PARKING:  For this workshop only, overflow parking will be available directly across the street from Skyline School, in the Solana Beach Presbyterian Church parking lot. If Skyline upper and lower parking lots are full, enter the church parking lot via Stevens Ave (from Lomas Santa Fe, turn left on Stevens just west of the school and turn left again into the THIRD church parking lot entrance off of Stevens Ave to park in the church OFFICE parking lot — the church does have their own event that day and will be using their other lots). Use the crosswalk at Stevens Ave and Lomas Santa Fe Dr to get to Skyline School.

Please personally invite your friends, colleagues, administrators, etc. to join us at our outstanding Pre-Conference workshop on September 12th (the presenters are the Amidons!), to our National Conference this November in San Diego, and to the rest of our wonderful workshops. The September 12th Pre-Conference workshop with the Amidons is partially sponsored by AOSA and is being offered, as a pre-conference experience, free of charge to interested educators and administrators. Please come and bring potential SDAOSA members.

A message from Marci Romney, our current SDAOSA president:

Happy New Year everyone! It’s time for our upcoming SDAOSA Chapter Sharing workshop: SUPER SATURDAY CHAPTER SHARING. We will also have our second annual SDAOSA Silent Auction…

I. CHAPTER SHARING this year will follow a similar format to last year’s except for instead of sharing a children’s book that you use with a music lesson, please share a manipulative or teaching aid that you like to use with a music lesson. Please plan to share a lesson that incorporates the use of a favorite manipulative or teaching aid. You know, the one that you love… is easy to make… or can be purchased inexpensively.

Bring: TEN COPIES of the lesson (for your small group) and ONE SAMPLE of the manipulative (just to show everyone). Please include a picture of the manipulative or teaching aid in your lesson handout though, along with any patterns or purchase information, your name, and your contact info.

First: Gather into small groups where we will each share our lesson and manipulative with our small group. Next: Each small group will choose ONE of the lessons to present to the entire group. Finale: 6-8 Lesson Presentations

We will get all those who attend the workshop a copy of all the lessons via an online link where you can download one PDF document that contains all the lessons (just make sure Dorothy gets one of your lesson copies to scan). You might have access to up to 50 new lesson ideas after the workshop!

II. SILENT AUCTION Last year’s Silent Auction was a huge success as several members donated instruments, teaching aids, music, CDs, resource books, etc. We raised over $370 for our San Diego chapter!

If you have items you would like to donate to our Second Annual Silent Auction, please email Lenore with a list of what you would like to donate. She will email you back with details as to how to price your items, along with auction procedures.

Members will have three 20-minute opportunities to shop: Before the workshop (from 8:40-9:00am) and during the workshop (during morning break, and another period scheduled within the workshop). At 1pm, the winners of each item will collect their item(s) and pay for them. Please bring your CHECK BOOK (preferred) or cash! We do not have ability to process credit cards.
